Home Office Guide
Starting your own business costs a lot of money. One of the major outgoings that causes headaches for most start-up business owners is rent. Signing leases, coming up with the bond and dealing with exorbitant rents can put a dampener on even the most sure fire business plan. To remedy this, many start-up business owners choose to run their business from home, at least initially.
In order to create the most successful home based business that you can, you first need to do a bit of research. Ask yourself questions like: Is it possible to run a business out of your home? Are there council regulations or other legal issues that will prohibit or affect your business activities (for example zoning, signage, noise, environmental issues, parking or power usage)? Will running a home based business create problems in your family or personal life? Call your local council and ask them if they offer information for starting a small home based business. One advantage of running a home-based business is your ability to claim expenses relating to the area of your home used for business. You may also be able to claim travel expenses incurred between your home and other places of business. You will still have a number of different tax obligations including GST, PAYG and fringe benefits tax, and there may be other regulations that you need to comply with depending on your location and the type of business you operate. Contact your accountant or the Australian Tax Office for more specific information regarding your situation. |
Virtual Offices
There are other options when setting up a business. Serviced offices are often well located and cheaper than renting conventional office space and include services such as a receptionist, meeting rooms, photocopying and printing, and other state-of-the art office equipment. |
The Down Side to Home Offices
There is also a down side to running a home based business. You need to be sure that you can get what you need to get done in an environment that could be full of distractions. Some problems you might come up against are: Lack of self-discipline and motivation. Isolation. You will most often be working by yourself and have little contact with co-workers or employees. Cabin fever. You will never be able to go home to escape the office. Space. Working from home can take up a lot of space. Communication. It can sometimes be hard to communicate and keep track of your employees when you don't see them face-to-face every day. Overwork. There is always the danger that your work will take over your life. It's too easy to get stressed out about finishing a project and stay in the office all night. |
